Training and Competency Testing in IR
The UEMS IR Division endorses the European Curriculum and Syllabus for Interventional Radiology/ETR for IR. The document comprises general topics and safety concepts and covers all specific areas with which a well-trained interventional radiologist should be familiar.
The document is revised on a regular basis and the third edition was recognized as a European Training Requirements (ETR) document in 2022.
For this latest edition, adaptations have been made according to the UEMS template to increase focus on the organisation of training (e.g., structure of training, competency levels, governance, or quality assurance for trainees, trainers and training centres). Moreover, the syllabus received a more detailed structure for the interventional oncology section, duplications have been reduced and the traffic light system for examination preparation has been revised.
The European Curriculum and Syllabus conveys the knowledge required for certified subspecialisation in radiology. Physicians who have followed the objectives of the curriculum and mastered the content of the syllabus can take the opportunity to sit the European Board of Interventional Radiology and prove their professional competence. The European Board of Interventional Radiology was accredited by UEMS-CESMA in 2017. The UEMS IR division also endorses the EBIR examination and deems competency testing to be a hugely important process to document the adequacy of training and competence in IR.
The training pathway to become an IR will be developed together with the UEMS radiology section.
